Explanation:

According to http://earthsky.org/ the closest recorded supernova was recorded by Johannes Kepler, and that was about 20,000 light years away. The web site also lists the closest possible candidate for a supernova right now is about 150 light years away. The biggest type of supernova would need to be at least 100 light years away to cause any damaging effects to Earth so we are safe.
