All cells in the solid tissue are surrounded by extra cellular matrix. This extra cellular matrix is composed of proteins and polysaccharides.

Explanation:

Many properties of the cell surface and internal functions of the cell are dependent on proteins that extend from the cell surface into the extra cellular matrix or to the surface of other cells.

In addition many of the proteins on the cell surface carry complex carbohydrate modifications. This is called as the glycocalyx. Like the protein components, the sugars are involved in adhesions between cells and also have a protective function.

A less easily observed form of extra cellular matrix is found in the form of peri cellular matrix. This not only gives a mechanical support by binding cells together, but with the glycocalyx provides a biochemical barrier around the cell. It acts as a docking facility for imports and exports to and from the cell and a medium through which chemical signalling can take place.
