Rutherford concluded that atom was mostly empty space with a dense, positively charged nucleus in the center.

Rutherford fired a stream of tiny positively charged particles at a very thin sheet of gold foil although it was 2000 atoms thick >_<.
Surrounding the foil was a screen coated with a material that glowed whenever a positively charged particle hit it. Using a microscope to detect the flashes of light made by the positively charged particles as they hit the screen, HE was able to prove that Thomson's model was incorrect.
