#MgO + H_2O rarr Mg(OH)_2#

I have an idea that magnesium oxide would only be sparingly soluble in water. Both the oxide and its hydroxide would be fairly insoluble.

#CaO#, which features the much large #Ca^(2+)# ion, would react quantitatively, and would spit when you added water.
