Objects seem to be in a different place in water due to light refraction.

Explanation:

You've probably seen this when you put a straw in a glass of water. The straw seems to be broken! Refraction occurs when a wave (of light) enters in a medium (in this case, water) that has a slower speed of light. The refraction, caused by the bottom part of the ray reaching the slower medium first, bends the light ray to the "normal to boundary" line.
