Cell membranes are very picky about what they let "in". Generally, polar or large molecules don't get in, and small, nonpolar molecules may spontaneously diffuse.

Glucose is relatively large. Useful for your cells (read: diabetes is a disorder), but large.

Insulin is a molecule that binds to a receptor on the cell membrane that facilitates the diffusion of glucose. This begins the metabolism of a macromolecule we rely on for energy.
