Name three basic services the Catholic Church provided to the people of medieval Europe?

1 Answer

Baptisms, marriages, and funerals

Explanation:

In the medieval period, the control the Catholic Church had over people was near total. People were taught, and believed, that God, Heaven, and Hell were real and they needed the Church to help them achieve Heaven and avoid Hell.

Three basic services the Church provided were (and, let's face it, still do):

  • Baptism - if you weren't baptized, you couldn't go to Heaven.
  • Marriage - there was no such thing as "living in sin" - (well, ok, there was and it was absolutely forbidden), let alone "friends with benefits". If you wanted a family, you had to get married - otherwise you wouldn't go to Heaven.
  • Funeral - to be able to go to Heaven you needed to be buried in Holy Land and the only way to do that was to pay to be buried in a Church cemetery.

All of these services had to be paid for, of course. And these were on top of the 10% tax people paid to the Church (called "tithes") each year.
