Berlin was divided into four sectors at the end of World War Two - American, British, French and Russian. The first three were amalgamated to form West Berlin and the Russian sector became known as East Berlin.

Explanation:

Germany was also divided into East Germany and West Germany. Because Berlin was situated entirely within East Germany, the Western Allies had to insist that land and air access from the West were agreed by the Russians. They became known as the Berlin corridor and only disappeared when Russia and the West agreed to re-unite East and West Germany.
