Polar solvent.


If you think about ionic compounds as those that have some 'charge' associated with them in solution, then you may see the correlation with “like dissolves like”. A polar solvent has an effective charge while a non-polar one is 'charge neutral'.

So, the polar solvent will have 'charged' functional areas that will attract (solvate) the ionic compounds more readily.
