The 10 amendments known as the Bill of Rights had to receive approval from the States.

Explanation:

Originally 12 Amendments were proposed as the bill of rights. Two of these amendments did not receive enough votes to become part of the constitution. The ten that were approved became law that must be obeyed by all the states , people and federal government of the United States.

Amendments to the constitution can be repealed. One such amendment was the prohibition on the use of alcohol. It turned out that the prohibition against the use of alcohol caused more problems than it solved, So a super majority of states (3/4) voted to repeal the law.

The so called equal rights amendment requiring that men and women be treated the same in all situations never received approval from enough states to become law.

Interestingly one of the objections was that the law would permit men to use women's restrooms. invading privacy. An executive order in place today allows men that think they are women to use the women's restrooms. Perhaps the US should rethink the equal rights amendment. i
