Everything depends on the perspective.
Explanation:
As an aquatic ecosystem we only look at the stream and what happens inside it.
As part of a forest ecosystem we look at the forest and what happens there. A stream is just one of the things inside that ecosystem. It delivers water, or takes the surplus away, just to mention one role.
The forest view may be wider in a way, but it does not show us what happens to the stream ecosystem before it enters the forest or after it leaves it.
