There are three parts to organic content analysis:

Preparation

  • Acidify to convert inorganic carbon to "CO"_2
  • Bubble an inert gas through the water to remove the "CO"_2
  • Filter through a 0.45 µm filter to remove suspended solids

Oxidation

  • Oxidize organic carbon to "CO"_2 with persulfate in a UV-irradiated chamber

Analysis

  • Measure the IR absorption of the "CO"_2"
  • Report the organic carbon as mg/L or ppm TOC.
