There are a number of reasons.

Explanation:

Firstly the UN recognised the shortcomings of the League and tried to avoid them in its structure.

The Security Council with its 5 permanent members with the power of veto recognised the need to get the support of the superpowers, particularly the USA and USSR in making any decision effective.

Unlike the League, which failed in its attempts to stop aggressive expansonism in areas such as Abyssinia and Manchuria, the UN, could in certain circumstances, use military force.

Finally the USA was a member, which she had not been in the League.
