A food chain shows how food energy and nutrients are passed from one organism to another organism

Explanation:

The food chain starts with a producer or plant. The energy and nutrients are passed on to a first level consumer or herbivore.
The herbivore is eaten in turn by second level consumer or carnivore. The second level consumer may be eaten by a third level consumer or even a fourth level or top level consumer.

At all of these levels the animals can be recycled by bacteria decomposers, and scavengers such as vultures. These scavengers and decomposers return the nutrients back to soil where the nutrients are reused by plants to produce food again.
