The Eastern Roman Empire. ( Also called the Byzantine Empire) was located in the Greek speaking part of the Empire. The local people in the part of the world controlled by the Byzantine Empire spoke Greek. So over a period of time even the ruling elite of the Eastern Roman Empire including the Church leaders spoke Greek.
