There were 3 Vietnam Wars after World War 2. Basically Ho Chi Minh and his followers weren't going to accept anything less than independence and unity for Vietnam.

Explanation:

The British, French and weirdly the Japanese acting in concert with the British and the French fought the Vietminh immediately post War as the Vietminh tried to assert possession of Saigon. It was a short conflict in which led to the French taking possession of Saigon and parts of South Vietnam. The British and the Japanese left Vietnam leaving The French to clear the rest of the country.

The French then took possession of Hanoi initiating the Second round of fighting 1946 to 1954. This ended in the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu in North Eastern Vietnam. The Geneva Accords was the result. The failure of the agreement led to continued Vietminh attacks and American and South Vietnamese counter insurgency action.

The 3rd round went from 1955 (from the establishment of MAAG Vietnam) to 1975 the fall of Saigon. The conflict escalated and had ups and downs but the communists finally took over all of Vietnam.
