The layer that separates the inside of a cell with the outside.

Explanation:

Every cell has a membrane around it. You can see this like a border to enter or leave the cell. This border consists out of many phospholipids. These are showed below.

The hydrophilic head of a phospholipid is made up of a negatively charged phosphate group.

In the membrane, different types of proteins are placed, which can be used to transport molecules across the membrane. If you want to know more about the transport across the membrane, you could check out this link.

You could see the cell membrane as the wall of a room, in which the room is then the cell. In this room, you can change the environment, produce stuff and control things without directly affecting other rooms. If you want to share something with another room, you could go through a door, which is in the cell represented as a transport protein in the membrane.
