The isolationism that had prevailed in the United States gave way to nationalism and a desire to combat the dictatorships of the Axis Powers.

Explanation:

Before Pearl Harbor the United States felt that the vast oceans would protect America from the conflicts in Europe and Asia. The Attack on Pearl Harbor destroyed the sense of invulnerability that had kept America out of World War II.

Immediately after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor the United States declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy. The United States felt that America had a responsibility to defend democracy. American forces were mobilized to fight both in the Pacific and in Europe. More American troops were sent to fight Germany than were sent to fight Japan.

Japan had hoped that the massive defeat at Pearl Harbor would demoralize the United States, leaving Japan free to dominate Asia.
Instead America was outraged and shocked by surprise attack and became determined to defeat totalitarianism. Initially outnumbered and facing superior weapons America fought back against Japan and Germany.

Pearl Harbor woke America up from its dream of secure isolation and motivated America to become involved in World WarII.
