# What is pi (sic)?

May 19, 2017

"pi", usually written as the Greek letter $\left(\pi\right)$, is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to its diameter. It is one of the most common real constants in all of mathermatics.

#### Explanation:

Consider any circle of diameter $\left(D\right)$ and circumfenence $\left(C\right)$

Then $\pi = \frac{C}{D}$ It can be proved that $\pi$ is a constant for any circle.

$\pi \approx 3.14159265$ (to 8 decimal places)

$\pi$ is irrational (i.e. cannot be expressed as a fraction: $\frac{p}{q} : p , q \in \mathbb{Z}$)

$\pi$ is also transcendental (i.e. is not the root of any polynomial equation with rational coefficients)

$\pi$ is one of the most common real constants in all of mathematics.
