Moon is a spherical body. 50% of its surface is always lit by Sun.

Explanation:

From our position on Earth we can not see all these 50% surface at all times. On new moon night, we can not see moon at all. In the picture, inner portion shows the 50% always lit by Sun. Outer portion shows how we see moon from Earth in in a lunar month.
