The Big Bang Theory Destroyed the Steady States theories of the Universe. The Theory produced the idea that the present Universe had a beginning.

Explanation:

Before Edwin Hubble discovered the doppler effect in the universe the scientific consenus was that the universe was eternal and self existent. This idea gave rise to the philosophical position of material realism. That is that matter energy and natural cause is all that has ever existed. The Big Bang Theory called into question the assumptions of naturalism or material realism.

To maintain the philosophical assumption of material realism the alternating universe theory was developed in responds to the Big Bang Theory. This is sometimes called the Rubber Ball theory. The idea was that the universe alternated between expansion caused by repeating Big Bangs and contractions that resulted in Big Crushes reforming the conditions for another Big Bang.

In 1998 experimental observations indicated that the Big Crush would never happen as the Universe was increasing its rate of expansion. This indicates that there is not enough matter in the universe to reverse the expansion of the Universe. This disproves alternating universe theories. The Big Bang theory again calls into question the philosophies of material realism.
