Pretty straightforward, since we have altitudes given in multiples of 1500 m.
At 4500 m, our temp has decreased by 3 * 8 degrees C.
Or, 24 deg. C.
So, add this back to your temp at 4500 m (4 degrees) to get 28 degrees C at ground level.
At 9000 m, our temp decreases by a further 3*8 degrees. So subtract 24 from your 4 degrees to get -20 degrees C.
All very plausible real-world temperatures. I can personally testify that it gets REALLY COLD up that high.
