Water moves in and out through living semipermeable membranes by osmosis and with the help of aquaporins.

Explanation:

In most cells, water moves in and out by osmosis through the lipid component of cell membranes.

However this did not explain the movement of water from cells with high permeability like epithelial cells.

Aquaporins were discovered by Peter Agre .Nobel prize 2003

Aquaporins are the plumbing system of cells and integral membrane proteins. They are embedded in the cell membrane
They allow movement of water but prevent the passage of ions and solutes.

Some aquaporins are specialized,aquaglyceroporins, which transport other small uncharged dissolved molecules including ammonia, CO2, glycerol, and urea.
