The smooth endoplasmic reticulum, which does not have ribosomes is responsible for production of hormones, lipids and steroids. It releases calcium ions. It can also store steroids and ions for the cell. It has an enzyme that is used in cellular reaction. For example in liver cell this enzyme helps to break toxic substances.
