As far as the entire human race goes, it appears that the average IQ is increasing over time. However, it is hard to tell if that is due to increased test-taking abilities coming from our society or an actual increase in intelligence. (source)
I found this list of living mathematicians who are well known and have contributed significantly to the field of mathematics. Perhaps the reason they are less famous is that our general population just doesn't pay as much attention to that sort of thing as much nowadays.
