You add the two numbers under the radical:

#sqrt(3+2) = sqrt(5)#

#sqrt5# results in two numbers and can only be approximated, because the digits to the right of the decimal go on forever.

The principal number is:

#sqrt5 ~~ 2.2361#

The other number is:

#sqrt5 ~~ -2.2361#
