Explanation:

The great depression was a time of vast food and money shortages after the stock market crash. People lost everything they had. Due to the shortages in food, soup and bread lines were set up to feed the populace. Organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation army helped out too. People rarely died of hunger, but malnourishment and starvation was common. The government did not really help a lot until the election of Franklin Roosevelt in '32.
