The founders believed in the philosophy of the Enlightenment

Explanation:

Baron Montequie said that power corrupts and and that the more power that the government has the more corrupt the government becomes. The power of the government must be limited in order to preserve the freedom of the individuals.

John Locke said that the rights of individuals comes from
god and not from the government. These rights of life liberty and property (pursuit of happiest ) are not given by the government and should not be taken away by the government. The power of the government needs to be limited to prevent the government from interfering with the basic human rights as defined by John Locke and the enlightenment philosophers.

A government that becomes too powerful will invariably take away the rights and freedoms of individuals.
