The beginnings and ends of shadow lie between the light and darkness and may be infinitely diminished and infinitely increased. Shadow is the means by which bodies display their form. The forms of bodies could not be understood in detail but for shadow.

A lot of Da Vinci's advice to artists is that of immediate importance to a student. Light can make a picture more dramatic but also show less detail. In trying to understand how light works rephasing how we see can aid the student to see and understand the nature of light and how it can reveal and obscure.

People like Da Vinci were constantly teaching as part of their everyday routine. Look at his paintings an see how the light reveals and obscures. How it adds drama but reveals important detail. How realistic is his use of light? Does he allow the realistic use of light to obscure detail? Does light appear to add life to the picture? His comment is for the student to see better.
