The genes of an organism determine (for the most part) what an organism will be able to do and what it will look like.

Explanation:

Imagine that all the genes of an organism are like a complete manual to build a car. In this manual are pages in which the method for building parts of the car is explained (genes). By following these pages you will be able to build the car (organism) the way it is supposed to be. eg: four wheels (think four limbs), engine (heart)

This means that the genes determine how an organism is built up. Other genes may encode things like enzymes for digestion and biosynthesis
