Except for some varieties of plants adapted for brackish water or sea-plants (kelp, seaweeds), normal plants require fresh water. The excess sodium in seawater upsets the cellular osmotic pressure, as it does in humans. The result in both is eventually death.

That is why ancient "scorched earth" conquest policies "salted" farmland (instead of burning it) to prevent its reuse in agriculture, often for decades.
