Explanation:

The term biosphere would refer to the living component of the earth, which would include the surface (land, water), subsurface (soil) and lower atmosphere (not sure how high algae have been reported, but I bet they get up pretty high).

The deep earth, upper atmosphere and any zone absent of all life would be excluded.
