A dog matures and ages faster than humans do, we use "dog years" as a smaller and less complicated way of measuring a dog's life.
Biologically speaking, a dog's metabolism is faster than that of a humans, and as such they mature and age faster. Measuring in dog years (a multiple of 7 for 1 year of a humans life) is a way of comparing a dog's current age to that of a human's. So a dog may be 3 years old to us, but in reality they are about 21 years old when compared to a human.
