American colonies become used to autonomy a little interference from Britain.

Explanation:

Britain was busy fighting a war with France and neglected the colonies, not enforcing any of it's strict policies. This led to more power to colonial legislatures and merchants forming trade agreements with other countries (they were only allowed to trade with Britain, but this was not enforced during the period of salutary neglect).

This salutary neglect led to rebellious colonists when Britain tried to regain a tight grip on the colonies. They were used to operating by themselves and without interference from a distant authority.
