The neurons telling you there is a stimulus will stop firing.

Explanation:

Think about when you first put on clothes in the morning, you can feel the fabric against your skin, but eventually that goes away.

It requires energy to let you know there is a stimulus and if you do not respond to the stimulus your body will try to save energy. Your body learns to ignore constant stimuli.

For example, I work in LUSH and the smell is very strong, however after I have been at work for 10 minutes I no longer notice it.
