In the book " Thank You, Ma'm" by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones took Roger home after his attempt to steal her pocketbook. She then takes him home after feeling some empathy for his situation. So in her own way, she raises him the hour she met him like as if he was her child. Since evidence hints that Mrs. Jones does not have children. She says things like " if you were my son" very straight forward. She also gives him the ten dollars he needs to buy the shoe but also warning him about buying the shoes.

From this, we can tell her hope for him to grow up, by giving him food and allowing him to become fore mature.
