Mansa Musa ( Great King) took a pilgrimage or Hajj to Mecca. and brought back Islamic scholars

Explanation:

West Africa had been trading with the Islamic Empires to the north from the time of Ghana. The influence of Islam had been . increasing in West Africa as a result of this trade. The West African cultures had no written language, Islam provided a written language and a literature based culture.

The Empire of Mali endorsed Islam as the official state religion. Mansa Musa ( a title not a name) by traveling to Mecca confirmed and strengthened the position of Islam in West Africa. His caravan brought so many black slaves, and pounds of gold to Saudi Arabia that the value of slaves and gold were depressed for decades. This was truly a "Royal Visit".

The Islamic Scholars Mansa Musa brought back from his visit establish Timbuktu as a center of learning and culture for centuries. What Mansa Musa did by traveling to Mecca established the status of both the culture of Islam and West Africa. Large parts of West Africa are Islamic to this day.
