Neuron is basically composed of two parts: " Cell body or soma " and " cytoplasmic processes ".

  • Cell body or Soma:
    It constitutes cell membrane' cytoplasm(contain nissil's granules) and nucleus. It is the main part of the neuron because it can regenrate the axons and dendrites. Thus biosynthesis of material necessary for growth occurs in it. Any damage to cell body can result in quite serious complications.
  • Cytoplasmic processes:
    As the name represents, these processes arise from cytoplasm. These are of two types as mentioned below:
    Dendrites:
    These are the branched projections of cell body that propagate the electromagnetic signal(nerve impulse) towards the cell body.
    Axons:
    These are long, slender projections of neuron that conduct the nerve impulse away from cell body or soma.
