All energy input to the earth comes from the sun. The amounts absorbed vary across the planet based on cloud cover, water or earth conditions, and the angle of the earth's local surface to the sun.

Differing amounts of heat energy from the sun cause different atmospheric temperatures. Those in turn create both thermal and mass gradients whose movement towards equilibrium cause the effect we call wind.
