Slaves were treated poorly, and even when their owners treated them "well," they were still viewed as property.

Explanation:

Slaves were crammed into the holds of ships. Without proper ventilation, bathroom areas, with overcrowding and little food and water, many slaves died in the ships and never made it to the colonies.

In the colonies, there were usually 2 different types of slaves: house slaves and field slaves. Regardless of type, these slaves were worked for long hours without pay. Sometimes they were beaten by their owners. Viewed as property, a slave owner could do anything to his slaves, including kill them, overwork them, and in the case of female slaves, sexually assault them.
It was zero fun to be a slave.
