Rh compatibility refers to the ability to accept blood; an Rh positive person can receive Rh positive or Rh negative blood, while an Rh negative person can only receive Rh negative blood.

Rh factor is a protein that is on red blood cells, so blood can be Rh positive or Rh negative depending on if the blood has the Rh factor. While having the Rh factor or not doesn’t affect your health, if Rh positive blood were to somehow enter the system of someone with Rh negative blood, their body would attack the Rh positive blood as if it were a foreign substance. This is known to cause problems in pregnancy when the baby’s blood is Rh positive, but the mother is Rh negative because the mother’s body will see the baby’s blood as a foreign body.
