MOST "socially sensitive" issues are explored in this way.

Explanation:

A major value of much fiction - and science fiction in particular - is the ability to examine controversial issues of importance to human civilization without invoking identity and reflex defensiveness from the readers.

While we don't often learn the lessons, many of them are out there. Significant "topic" examples include many bigotry or prejudicial examples, such as people being "different" in any number of ways.

Technological "advances" are also easier to discuss in a fictional "far out" setting before trying to tackle the same issues much closer to home and reality. Whether one is a proponent or an opponent of an idea, the use of fictional stories - often with substituted subjects - is one of the best ways to explore the pros and cons and make ones own risk assessment without emotional reactions that will impair a good decision.
