Intestinal villi increase the rate of absortion by giving more space to the nutrients to be absorbed.

Explanation:

Intestinal villi are richly supplied with blood capillaries and a vessel called lacteal of lymphatic system with covering of epithelia cells

Electron microscope reveals that Intestinal villi have countless closely packed cylindrical processes called micro-villi or brush-borders which further increase the rate of absorption by increasing the surface area.

The total area for absorption become incredibly large by the infoldings, villi and micro-villi.Thus the rate of absorption is also increased.
