Crossing over is the exchange of genetic materials between homologous chromosomes during reproduction.

Explanation:

It is the basic concept of genetics and cell biology and occurs during meiosis.

Crossing over is the he final phase of genetic recombination which occurs in the pachytene stage of prophase I of meiosis during synapsis. It occurs when matching regions on matching chromosomes break and then reconnect to the other chromosome.

The effect is to assort the alleles on parental chromosomes, so that the gametes carry combinations of genes different from either parent.
