Dec 17, 2017

$x = - 3$

#### Explanation:

It is given that;

$x + 5 = 2$

Subtract $5$ from both sides;

$x + 5 - \textcolor{g r e e n}{5} = 2 - \textcolor{g r e e n}{5}$

$x = - 3$

Hope it helps!

Graphical approach

#### Explanation:

The other answers are the most efficiant means of solving this question, but i just wanted to provide a graphical interpritation:

Red $\implies y = x + 5$
Blue $\implies y = 2$

Where these two lines intersect, that is the solution to the problem:

Hence we see they cross at $\left(- 3 , 2\right)$

$\implies x = - 3$

Im not sure if you learnt about grpahs of lines, but when you do, this is an interesting way of thinking about it!
