The Middle Atlantic rift is a chain of active volcanoes running roughly N-S through the seafloor. It is characterized by intense lava emission creating a "conveyor belt"effect with spreading of the seafloor towards West and East leading to the formation and continuous enlargement of the Atlantic basin. The same kind of activity is opening the rift valley in eastern Africa.
