The mammal would need some kind of mechanical support, such as a BVM mask (bag-valve-mask), frequently seen in television shows, or a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine. Otherwise it could die.

There is an autoimmune disease in humans called myesthenia gravis (MG), in which the body forms antibodies against the acetylcholine receptors on voluntary muscle cells. During daily activities, it's possible for a person with MG to go into a myesthenic crisis, in which the diaphragm and intercostal rib muscles become so week that the person cannot breath and must be treated with a BVM or CPAP machine. An MG crisis can be fatal.
