Heat requires energy.

Explanation:

Birds and Mammals are warm blooded, or Homoeothermic, which means we spend energy in maintain an acceptable body temperature for our proteins and cells to function properly, but heat is a by-product of spent energy, so we need to use a lot to keep that temperature up. Other organisms, fish, amphibians, reptiles are Ectothermic, or cold-blooded, so they do not maintain a set body temperature but it fluxes with their environment, which is why they move less in cold temperatures, as they are trying to conserve energy, and why lizards bask in the sun. They slow their metabolism down and can almost use no energy while in this state.
