The hypothesis is that Earth (AKA Gaia) is a fully conscious organism that influences all system that exist upon it. There is no real evidence to back it up, just some "mind blowing" coincidences that really get people going.

The Gaia Hypothesis is used a rational for the conservation of the earth. If the earth itself is a conscious entity then it deserves the respect given to living organisms.
There is no empirical evidence that the earth is a conscious entity. To some people that the hypothesis can be used to justify environmental issue is sufficient reason for believing in the Gaia Hypothesis. For other people there are sufficient other reasons to support environmental issues and there is no need for an unsupported Gaia Hypothesis.
