A series circuit has only one path for the electrons to flow. A parallel circuit has two or more paths.
Explanation:
A circuit carries electrons from the negative to the positive terminal of a battery/cell. Loads (resistances) are placed between the terminals. If a circuit contains two or more paths for the electrons, it is a parallel circuit. An analogy would be city streets, on which you can go several ways to get to your destination. A race track has only one route from the start line to the finish line, like a series circuit.
